Intro • Obesity has a significant impact on a child’s physical and mental health • In order to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic, we need to implement more programs and services that reduce the medical complications that affect obese children.
Findings • “Obesity-related diseases account for nearly 10 percent of medical spending in the United States, or an estimated $147 billion a year” (Yancy, para2).
Findings • Causes • Bullying by normal-weight children. • Depression from social isolation and low self-esteem. • Effects • A sedentary lifestyle. • Emotional eating.
Solutions • At home: • prepare nutritious meals for the family • Decrease child’s time spent watching television • In the community: • After school physical activities at recreational centers (leagues and teams) • At school: • No vending machines • Physical activity
Synthesis • Class sessions during after school hours for parents and kids • Awareness, prevention
