PHYSICAL FEATURES • There are many different features on the Earth’s surface. • The surface or landforms of the Earth include mountains, plateaus and lowlands. • Other features such as rivers, seas, oceans and lakes are formed by water.
MOUNTAIN • A mountain is an area of land that rises above 2000 feet. • There are three major types of mountains : Fold mountains, Fault or Block Mountains and Volcanic Mountains.
PLATEAUS • A Plateau is a large flat highland separated by sleep slopes from the surrounding land. • It is also called a Table Land.
Low land • A flat land that is lower than the level of the surrounding area is called a lowland. • Some people believe lowlands were formed thousands of years ago by glaciers which scraped the land clean.
Interesting Facts • The mountains cover about 24% of the Earth’s surface. • The Dead Sea is the saltiest sea in the world , no fish can survive in it. • The Himalayas form the Earth’s highest mountain region with over 30 peaks which are higher than 24,000 feet.
