iPhysics? Experiences with an iPad in the Physics lab
Envisioned Use • Lab Demonstrator • Mark Entry • Resource Access • Time Entry
Why iPad? • Lightweight and unobtrusive – like paper pad • Quick turn-on. • Battery EASILY lasts all day. • Perfect screen size – e.g. Ipod touch, Dell Streak too small, larger screen too unwieldy/heavy. • Relatively Cheap (e.g. compared to tablet PC – half the price). • Really easy and responsive to use touch navigation and simple input. • Great Screen resolution and brightness.
Issues • Non-standard browser • Mark-book in Blackboard doesn’t work • Google docs is “hobbled” • Might not work with the new sessional timesheet
Other Uses • Astronomy - Star Walk • Demonstrator “presentations” • Student data acquisition – e.g. SPARKvue (PASCO software) • Student Logbook – though currently hampered by lack of good pen input?
Some Questions • How to secure them? • Easy charging station– extra admin overhead? • Are there better alternatives? • HP Slate 500 (still more expensive, short battery life, long start-up/shut done etc.) • Dell’s Inspiron Duo – convertible netbook (short battery life, long start-up/shut done etc.) • Some sort of Android tablet?... possibly… and some advantages, such as flash support
Final Notes • I haven’t bought any more just yet! • Others in the department have borrowed the iPad – some have been moved to buy one, others not so sure… • Presentation done with MySlide
