  2. The core themes 1. Socialisation , culture and identity 2. Social differentiation , power and stratification These themes are applied to particular substantive areas of sociology. These themes are interpreted broadly as threads running's through many areas of social life . 3. Students must also understand the significance of conflict and consensus, social structure and social action, and the roles of ‘values’ 4. Globalisation – we must not forget

Core theme 1: Socialisation Secondary Socialisation : Education • What are values? • What are your personal values ? • What are your Schools values ? • How does the school put their values (transmission) into action? Socialisation is how culture is passed on Socialisation is the way in which culture is passed on from generation to generation It begins in childhood in the family (primary) and continues in school (secondary) into adult life As society’s values are internalised by socialisation , so that they become a part of your way of thinking

  4. Sociologists argue that education transmits many values • Meritocracy– everyone has a chance of succeeding regardless of your background • Maintains the position of the middle class Find evidence from your own experience of school

  10. Core theme 3 :Sociology in a global context Globalisation is the idea that the world is becoming more connected . Improved technology and communication , an increase in TNCs and more migration means globalisation has affected many areas of Sociology . What affect do you think it has had on the family , education system, crime patterns and religion ?

  11. A Level transition to Sociology project This research-based project is designed to give you an ideal grounding for A-level study. Research and complete all of the tasks to give you a good idea of what to expect on a Sociology course. If you then choose to study Sociology this will give you a good head start for your A Level Sociology. Present the tasks in any format you like – this could be a powerpoint or a poster, or a leaflet, or word processed on an A4. The project will be due in 8th of September 2017-Friday There will be a certificates and prizes for the top three best projects which can be used on application forms for future jobs, courses, apprenticeships and University degrees!
