  2. Pre-Departure • Register @ Department of State Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) • Review OSAC – country specific information and country crime and safety reports • Do your homework: Country specific websites; laws and currency exchange rates; cultural awareness; maps

  3. Packing • Pack wisely. Prohibited items in carry on. • 2-3 day “survival items” in carry on • Do not display company logos on luggage. • Contact information INSIDE luggage • Passport – Plain Cover • Will; Itinerary; Property Insurance; Notify Credit Card Company – check limits

  4. Health • Health Insurance • Extra Meds, glasses etc. • Inoculations • Travel Med Kit: Anti-diarrheal, antibiotics, anti-malaria, antihistamine, antacid, laxative, anti-bacterial, pain reliever, bandages, insect repellant,

  5. During Your Trip • Situational Awareness: Head up, eyes and ears open “listen to your intuition” • Instinct • Aware of perceptions; behavior; familiarization; remove name tags; local media alerts; support network; emergency procedures; food and drink offers (decline)

  6. Personal Conduct YOU WILL NOT BLEND IN • Behavior • Dress • Local Sensitivities • Public expressions • Identification • Confidence

  7. Electronic Security • IF YOU DON’T NEED IT DON’T BRING IT • Bring “Clean” equipment – wipe, sanitize • Do not expect privacy • Do not use local computers to connect to secure network • Update software (antivirus, firewall etc.) • Upon return change all passwords

  8. Air Travel • Clothing • Arrival time • Stay with luggage • Set watch to local times • Conversations • Alcohol - Water • Documents

  9. Ground Travel • Use common vehicle model - taxis • Plan trip, always look for escape routes • Cell phone/first aid/maps/flashlight/ID • Alert to scams (while stopped in traffic) • Windows/doors/seatbelts • Taxi: Official/Licensed/Write Down Number/Avoid getting into occupied vehicle

  10. Lodging • Use reputable establishments • Meet visitors in lobby • Do walk around • Check phone/locks/ and inspect room • Read safety instructions (exits, fire plan) • Do not use “make up room”, (TV or radio on) • Secure documents, laptops • Copy of hotel information in wallet/purse

  11. If You Become A Victim • Remain calm and alert • Note details of environment • Attempt to diffuse situation • Give up property (opposite toss) • Try ALL ploys • Make a scene • If Life Threatening - COMMIT !!!!!!! • Report to Embassy, seek PTS support

Hijacking/Kidnapping • EVERY SITUATION IS DIFFERENT • Know ransom policy • Passively Cooperative • Inconspicuous, avoid eye contact • Reasonable low key requests • Answers: short, volunteer nothing • Daily regimen • Eat, avoid alcohol • Maintain positive, hopeful attitude • Attempt escape ONLY after weighing all risks - COMMIT
