What is Blogging? • WEB LOG= WE BLOG • A chronological publication of personal thoughts . A blog is often what is happening in a person's life, similar to a diary site. • Blogs take many forms such as written, audio, photo, sketch, and video.
Types of Blogs: • Instructional/Informative • Day to day life/Rant • Debate • Reviews • Inspirational • Humorous • Business/Networking • Video
Why do people blog? • "We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads, and along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes and return to us as results." Herman Melville
Reasons People Blog: • To pass time and share experiences • Freedom of expression of thoughts/ideas • To be heard • To document their life/ diaries • Socialize/chat/connect with people • Spread ideas/give information
Who typically Blogs? • There are currently 70 million active blogs with an average of 120, 000 new ones being created per day worldwide • Journalists • Scholars • Everyday people like you and me

Blogging- Positive or Negative? • Is blogging positive or negative? Well it depends on who you talk to. Many people think it is simply a waste of time and others think it is an amazing way to express themselves. • Do you think that Blogging is positive or negative?
Positive • Allows for freedom of speech • Allows for freedom of thought • Blogging can free your mind • Allows for exposure to new people and things • Can be good for your career • Creative expression • Exploitation • Some think blogging is an example of online journalism
Negative • Allows exploitation • Can be bad for your career • Exposure of peoples personal lives • Opening the doors for invasion of privacy • Easy for other to steal your ideas and pictures – hard to protect when posted on the web • Uninhibited expression • Tone of voice • Addiction, obsession and anti-social behaviour • Writing that has content is turning into “posts” with meaningless words
Online Journalism Online journalism is defined as the reporting of facts produced and distributed via the internet. Traditional journalists typically do not consider blogs to automatically be journalist. However, there are some newsworthy sites that are blogs.
Exposure Rules for Blogging exposure: • Will this hurt your family and friends? • Will this put your job in jeopardy? • Most importantly: Is such a disclosure really interesting anyway?
