Eid Al Adha SuitcaseC&S Reflection Noor Salem 9A
How Did I come to be involved with this Activity? Since Eid Al Adha Suitcase happens every year, I decided last year that I would join in the following year because I would learn from it and - at the same time- get C&S credit. I also heard about it from my Arabic teacher – Ms. Rola – who was in charge for this activity, and has been in charge, for the past couple of years…. It was also advertised on the Qatar Academy page on Facebook & told us what we had to bring/do.
About eid al adha suitcase Eid Al Adha suitcase is an activity in which you encourage as many people as you can to get boxes filled with things from a certain list. These boxes are then carriedonto a truck, to a poor neighborhood. People who are signed up in this activity are there to help carry the boxes and are there to go around to each house to place the box by their house.
How does this benefit the community? The point of this is to cheer people up and put a smile on their faces for Eid and to help them with the things that they cannot afford so their families are happy and safe. This benefits the community because if each person in each country contributed and participated once in a while, there would be no such thing as ‘poor people’ in this world.
The role I played … In this C&S Activity, I – as well as everyone else signed up in the activity-had to bring in a box of all the things that were included on the list. The list included Oil, Sugar, Flour, dolls/ cars, and more. I also had to make a flyer version of the same list so that it would be all around school for people to see and get encouraged to participate into bringing in these items.
What did I learn that might help me in the future? After going to Al Khor and seeing the way some people lived, I realized how much people take things for granted, when they should actually just be thankful and grateful for all they’ve got. I have also learned that one simple good deed can make a huge difference on a person’s life, and can put a huge smile on their face. For example, giving a person 1 Riyal can make a huge impact because, again, if everyone did this, people would not be living in such poor conditions.
Did things go as planned? It went better than planned. Our main goal for the day was to go around each house, knock on their door to wish them a happy Eid, place the box and leave. We thought this process would take up a lot of time however it only took 45 minutes – excluding the bus ride, which took us 1 hour. Since we had extra time, the teachers decided to take us to a petrol station where they let us free to go wherever we wanted so we can eat. We visited McDonald’s, Hardees, Dunkin Donuts and a lot of other junk food/fast food restaurants.
Learner profiles • Caring:We were caring because we had the hearts and the time to actually go purchase a lot of items and to carry these heavy boxes from home to home. • Balanced:We were balanced, because we know what was right and wrong and what was fair and unfair. It was unfair that we would be spending our Eid holiday eating and having fun, while people with fewer advantages would be frowning and starving. • Inquirers:Everyone who signed up for the trip was curious to know how the trip was going to go. We asked questions on the trip and got to learn a lot of useful things that made us view things in a different perspective.
Challenges faced • One of the things that affected the activity was the weather outside. That day, we were sweating and carrying heavy objects. • We did not have any energy left however we overcame this challenge by thinking on the positive side which was that at least we were doing it for a good cause. • Secondly, carrying the heavy objects was a struggle for me since I’m small and weak. • I overcame this, however, by getting a partner to help carry the box with me.
Improvements that could be made ? Next time, they should improve on choosing a better and chiller/colder day to go to the neighborhood so we would get into that better mood.
