Biotechnology Summer Research Program • GetBiotechSmart’s Excellence in Biotechnology Grant • Objectives: • To introduce andapply biotechnology scientific concepts to laboratory experiments; • To stimulate student interest in pursuing biotechnology in college and careers; • To involve students in scientific research from sample collecting, laboratory work & computer analysis.
National Science Standards – Unifying Concepts • Students combine processes and scientific knowledge with scientific reasoning and critical thinking to develop their understanding of science. • Life Sciences focuses on scientific facts, principles, theory and models that are important: the cell & molecular basis of heredity • An understanding of science and technology establishes connections between the natural and designed world, linking science and technology. • A personal and social perspective of science helps a student understand and act on personal and social issues.
Summer Research Program • B-3 Program: Biotechnology, Biodiversity, Bioinformatics • Research tied to a regional environmental issue • Partnerships • Content support through State Parks, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and American Chestnut Foundation • Hands-on Experience • Field sampling for students to see the environmental issue • Laboratory experience • Involved Parents • Orientation meeting • Student presentations to families
American Chestnut – Regional Environmental Issue A fungal blight has wiped out a major deciduous tree in Eastern US American Chestnut tree was an important resource in NC: furniture, buildings, animal feed
Partners through the local University & State Park Ranger Kelly Cook, NC State Parks Dr. Jennifer Weller, UNCC Graduate Students Shatavia Morrison Chris Overall
Grant Support Enabled Our Biotech Research • Expands the Summer Research Program • Two Levels of Laboratory Experience • First level: biotechnology skills based program • Second level: biotechnology research focus to compare DNA of American Chestnut tree and Chinese Chestnut tree (blight resistant) • Allows 30 students to participate • Key equipment – • Supplement current equipment with micro-centrifuge, vortex mixers, digital balance, gel documentation • Disposable Supplies to support • Horizontal (agarose) and vertical (acrylamide) gel electrophoresis • Polymerase chain reaction
