Summary • Jarvis takes his wife to visit his wife’s niece’s house to help his wife take her mind off of Arthur’s death. • Barbara, Margaret’s niece, and Margaret ask Jarvis if he wants to go into town, and he says he will stay home. • While Jarvis was reading the paper someone knocked on his door, and when he opened it a native priest stood at the foot of the door steps. • Jarvis talks with this man and realizes that this man’s son killed Arthur. • The man then leaves for the train station.
Motifs • Fear and Sickness (mental)- Kumalo comes to apologize to Jarvis and confess that his son took Arthur’s life. (Pg. 177-178) • Sympathy- Jarvis pity’s Kumaloand tries to help him. • Suffering- Kumalo was suffering off the fact that his son killed another person. • Nature- The mines that look like “hills under the sun”. (Pg. 181)
Language • When Jarvis saw the native standing on his doorstep he addresses the man in Zulu. • The priest addresses Jarvis as “Umnumzana”, or sir. • The priest also speaks in a trembling voice that shows he is afraid. • Jarvis speaks English to Smith’s daughter who is also white.
