  5. DBIS letter Cuts include £180m (3%) efficiency gain, £83m clawback for over-recruitment (2009-2010) and another £135m because of ‘additional pressures’. Total softened by decimating capital – adding £84m back into teaching Penalties for over-recruitment at £3,700 per fte The one-off extra 10,000 places not sustained A warning about pension scrutiny..... Other points A historic buildings maintenance fund (£40m) has been scrapped Extra funding to operate Foundation degrees (because of the work-based elements) are being scrapped HEFCE to ‘devise new funding incentives for ...programmes that deliver the higher skills needed’ methods to be ‘robust’, implementation for 2011/12 In one year unit funding goes £4140-> £3950 : 4.6% cut http://www.rsc-london.ac.uk

High output (1% of the world, 12% of science citations, 33% of arts) but need more take-up in business, industry and community • Committed to 50% engagement - but not one size fits all • Expansion of ‘diverse’ models: WBL, FdAs, follow on for apprenticeships; 2 year intense degree programmes • More pressure to widen access • Encourage ‘further creativity’ around entry grades • More work in schools to promote interest and application • Expand the range of funding streams • Tuition Fees: Lord Browne to report post-Election http://www.rsc-london.ac.uk

  9. Research • Research: More funds concentration, ‘impact’, business links • Protect funding for ‘world class’, less emphasis on research elsewhere in sector • Research assessment will include measurement of ‘impact’ • More links to outside the research community http://www.rsc-london.ac.uk

  10. Numbers are de-stabilising for the sector, e.g. 1 in 20 staff • Mergers or other overhead reduction schemes • As a university you either up your research or get local • Add value to existing provision and business practices in smart ways http://www.rsc-london.ac.uk
