Assigned Letter: 2nd Corinthians Chapter 7-13 Author: Paul is said to be the writer of 2nd Corinthians. Date written: autumn of A.D. 57 Description of Recipient-Community: The letters are going to the Corinthian Church. Second Corinthians is a result of occasional, events, and problems that occurred in first Corinthians. The letters were also for the missionaries in Corinth that needed guidance. Situational details: The people need guidance and someone to help them get on the right path. Paul through his letters is revealing many emotions trying to help the people.
Chapter 7 Summary: In this chapter Paul wrote a letter to the people stating that the sadness they are facing is good because it brings them to repentance. They also rejoice in the refreshing spirit of Titus, who they believe will help them. Chapter 7 key verses: ‘I rejoice now, not because you were saddened, but because you were saddened into repentance; for you were saddened in a godly way, so you did not suffer loss in anything because of us.” 7:9
Chapter 8 summary: The chapter is about Paul teaching the people how to be generous and give what they have to others in need. He tells them he is giving to Macedonia because they begged for it but they really need what is being given. Paul advised them to do the same because it is what Jesus would have done. Chapter 8 key verses: “For if the eagerness is there, it is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.” 8:12
Chapter 9 summary: Paul talks about the people receiving the gift of God. He has confidence that they are ready but hopes that they don’t get distracted. Chapter 9 key verses: ‘Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need; you may have abundance for every good work.” 9:8
Chapter 10 Summary: In this chapter is it revealed that there is an everyday battle between flesh and spirit. Paul is being accused of weakens and not knowing Christ as much as he should. He is b being ridiculed for not teaching enough about Christ because he doesn’t know enough. Chapter 10 key verses: “For it is not the one who recommends himself who’s approved, but the one whom the Lord recommends. ‘ 10:18
Chapter 11 summary: Paul somehow uses reverse phycology to capture the people’s attention. He boasts about his stories but relates them back to Christ which is a way to deliver the message. Chapter 11 key verses: “But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts might be corrupted by a sincere (and pure) commitment to Christ.” 11:3
Chapter 12 summary: Paul continued to use the tactics to gain the people’s attention. God used is to his advantage and made Paul stronger to gain their attention. Chapter 12 key verses: ‘The signs of an apostle were preformed among you with all endurance, signs and wonders, and mighty deeds.’ 12:12
Chapter 13 summary: Paul reveals his love for the people and he continues to tell them to follow the way of Christ because he died for all of them. He advises them to self-examine themselves. Chapter 13 key verses: ‘ I warned those who sinned earlier and all the others, and I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on my second visit, that if I come again, I will not be lenient since you are looking for proof of Christ speaking in me. He is not weak toward you but powerful in you.’ 13:2-3
