Your Questions • What questions do you continue to have regarding linguistic variation and its implications for literacy acquistion and learning?
Warm-up • Brainstorm your home literacies from childhood and now. • How were/are they congruent or incongruent with the expectations of schooling? • How have your home literacies changed over time? If your home literacies have changed, what is the relationship of schooling to those changes?
Guided Discussion (do all) • Create a chart that compares/contrasts Heath, Meier, Gee, Goodman. • According to Heath, what is the relationship of the social practice of the bedtime story to children’s in-school literacy learning? • Heath describes different “ways with words.” How might these differences account for the over-representation of children of color in special education? • Meier makes specific recommendations for things teachers can do. How do these actions build on children’s cultural knowledge?
