Choosing and Recording the Preferred Title for Series and Subseries A series as a resource is treated like any other work or expression. The instructions for choosing and recording the preferred title for series are the same instructions for other works & expressions, which are found in RDA Chapter 6, Identifying Works and Expressions.
Choosing and Recording the Preferred Title for Series and Subseries RDA 6.2.2.1 The preferred title for the work is the title or form of title chosen as the basis for the authorized access point representing that work. Other attributes may be added to the preferred title to formulate an authorized access point that will distinguish the series.

Choosing and Recording the Preferred Title for Series and Subseries General Guidelines on Choosing the Preferred Title, Works Created After 1500 Generally, for works created after 1500, choose the title: • In the original language • By which the work has become known • Found in resources embodying the work • See preferred order of sources of information in 2.12.2.2 • or the form found in reference sources RDA 6.2.2.4

Choosing and Recording the Preferred Title for Series and Subseries RDA 6.2.2.5 Sources of Information General Guidelines on Choosing the Preferred Title, Works Created Before 1501 Generally, for works before 1501, choose the title: • In the original language • By which the work is identified in modern reference sources, or, if this is inconclusive • Choose the title most frequently found in: 1. Modern editions 2. Early editions 3. Manuscript copies
Choosing and Recording the Preferred Title for Series and Subseries RDA 6.2.2.8, 6.2.1.4, 6.2.1.5 Recording the Preferred Title • Apply instructions on capitalization given in Appendix A • Record numbers expressed as numerals or as words in the form in which they appear on the source • These instructions relate to numbering as part of the preferred title, not numbering that is part of the enumeration of the series • When enumeration is integrated with the series title on the piece, it will be dropped to form the preferred title (LCRI 6.27)

Record letters or initials without full stops between them as they appear on the piece (6.2.1.8 & LCPS 1.7.1 for further information) • Use only abbreviations that are either: • Integral parts of the title • Etc. in titles Laws, etc. and Treaties, etc.
