  5. Executive Summary The goal of this project is to complete a long-term community strategic plan that will design public services and infrastructure in a manner that carries sustainable communities well into the future.

  6. Project Overview • Nuvista received funding from Alaska Department of Community & Regional Affairs to carry out the project. • Focus: • Community sustainability • Community ownership of results • Develop a model that can be duplicated • Identify benefits, opportunities, and challenges

Top Priorities The top three priorities (in order): • Build a community connector road that runs to a deep water port • Construct a community deep water port • Improve water and sanitary wastewater facilities A number of other important projects were identified and are also listed in this report.

Challenges • Securing funds for road, port, water, and sewer facilities • Developing a consistent contact and communications system with community leaders and government entities • Working collaboratively with Tribal, City, and Corporate entities • Completing ANCSA Section 14(c) land claims in proposed infrastructure development locations • Managing large infrastructure projects • Securing training for project positions to facilitate local hire

Recommendations From Final Report This summary reflects findings identified through Community Outreach and input of the Advisory Board: • Good Gravel Resources on Nelson Island will make road and port building more economical. • A good port connected to the communities by road will reduce the cost of material goods on the island. • There is a strong desire to see improved water and sewer utilities on Nelson Island. This is a health and quality of life issue. • A single, well-managed solid waste facility on the island connected by road would reduce costs and move dump sites away from the villages.
