Location of Authority 1. God is the ultimate and only authority (Mark 14:36; Luke 1:37; Acts 17:28)

The Nature of Authority • Commission: the transfer of authority Jesus gave the Great Commission and said, “All authorityhas been given to me…” (Matthew 28:18) Authority without a commission (empowerment) is meaningless and dangerous. Simon the Sorcerer (Acts 8:9-24)
The Nature of Authority b. Backing or Support: assurance of authority God said, “Say to the children of Israel, I Am has sent me to you.” (Exodus 3:14) Jesus said, “I am with you always…” (Matthew 28:20) Police, Army have the support of government.
The Nature of Authority c. Confidence: boldness to act with authority 1. Knowing the work well. 2. Knowing limits of authority. 3. Knowing backing or support is there.
The Nature of Authority d. Influence: others will accept authority 1. An invisible component of authority. 2. The very presence of authority has influence.
The Nature of Authority e. Consequence: authority has an effect • Entails the power to punish or withhold benefits. • Punishment is the consequence for ignoring or disobeying authority. “Don’t eat this fruit, or you will die.”

The Origin of Authority Five Ways to Acquire Authority 3. Self-Investment or Assumed Power • A person may see a problem and undertake to remedy that problem. • Nehemiah is a good example. (Nehemiah 2:7-9).

Usurpation (Taking Forcefully) • One person may take authority away from others (Caesars--assassination). • Legitimate authority may be usurped by illegitimate leaders (coup). • Aaron usurped authority from Moses while Moses was on the mountain (Exodus 32:1).
The Origin of Authority Five Ways to Acquire Authority 5. Inheritance • Authority may be inherited by birthright. • Authority may be inherited by default. • Such authority is usually unearned. • Such authority is sometimes undesired by the one who inherits it.

Authority and Responsibility 2. Accountability -To be answerable for assumed or assigned responsibility. (Steward: Luke 16:2). -To pay a consequence for failure to fulfill responsibility. (Samson: Judges 16:21). Components of Responsibility
