  2. Objective • You will be able to form the passé composé of regular –er, -re, and –ir verbs that use avoir.

  3. The Passé Composé • The passé composé is the most common form of the French past tense. It is used to describe actions that began and were completed in the past • The passé composé can be translated into English in 3 ways. • French: Marc a joué au tennis. • English: Marc played tennis. • English: Marc has played tennis. • English: Marc did play tennis.

  4. Formation of the Passé Composé The passé composé is made using two parts: the helping verb (le verbeauxilliare)conjugated in the present tense, followed by a past participle. Passé composé = present tense of the helping verb + past participle

  5. The Auxiliary Verb Avoir • Most French verbs use avoir for their helping verb. • The verb avoir is conjugated into the present tense to form the first part of the passé composé. aiavons as avez a ont • J’aimangé du gâteau. • Nous avonsregardé Netflix.

  6. Past Participles of regular –er verbs • For regular verbs with an infinitive ending in -er, the past participle is formed by replacing the final -er of the infinitive with -é. • parler = parlé • jouer= joué • manger = mangé • Tu as parléà ton ami.

  7. Past Participles of regular –ir verbs • The past participle of regular verbs with an infinitive ending in -ir is formed by dropping the final -r from the infinitive. • finir = fini • choisir = choisi • réussir (to succeed)= réussi • Vousavezfinivos devoirs.

  8. Past Participles of regular –re verbs • The past participle of regular verbs with an infinitive ending in -re is formed by replacing the final -re of the infinitive with -u. • perdre (to lose)= perdu • attendre (to wait) = attendu • vendre (to sell) = vendu • Ilsontvendu la voiture.

  9. Practice Verbes that end in –er: Tuchantes Tu as chanté Verbs that end in –ir: Il finit Il a fini Verbs that end in –re: Je réponds J’airépondu

  10. Negation • Make a sentence with the passé composé negative by putting “ne pas” around the conjugated auxiliary verb. • Je n’aipasparléà Paul. • Elle n’apaschoisiun sandwich. • Ilsn’ontpasperduleursstylos.

  11. Asking Questions with the Passé Composé • Add a question mark. • Tu as perdutesclés? • Use est-ceque for a yes or no question. • Est-cequ’ila dansé? • To form a question in the passé composé using inversion, invert the conjugated helping verb with the subject and put a hyphen in between the helping verb and subject. • As‐tumangé? (Did you eat?) • If the subject begins with a vowel you have to add an extra hypen and a letter t. • A-t-ilchanté?
