McClammy Counseling Laboratory Connecting Students with ECU Resources
McClammy Lab • Lab staffed by Counselor Education graduate interns • Services provided: • Individual Counseling • Group Counseling • Outreach/Large Group Education Sessions
Lab’s Purpose • Training site for Counselor Education practicum and internship • Improve undergraduate student retention by helping student-clients identify resources that would help them be successful in the areas of academic development, career development and/or social/emotional development
What we know… • Many undergraduate students struggle to get connected with the larger campus community during their early years at ECU • Students who are connected to the campus community do better academically
What we hope to do… • Provide a resource for making the first connection for students • Lab Counseling Interns work with the student clients to identify the students’ interests, needs and career plans and to help connect the students to these resources
How do we do it… • Provide McClammy Lab services to COAD 1000 students • Counselor Intern will provide three sessions to the student client to help identify the students’ strengths, challenges, needs, interests • From these sessions, the counselor will identify resources that will help the student become more engaged and successful • The counselor serves as a bridge connecting students and resources
Triage Approach • AISR • Assess : Work with the student to explore personal strengths and challenges • Identify: Areas of need, interests, plans for the future • Support: Support the student’s exploration and thoughtful consideration of how to be successful as a college student preparing for a successful future career • Refer: The student to an appropriate campus resource for continued support and connection to the campus community
For COAD 1000 • One way to encourage students to utilize this resource is to include a Reflection & Exploration Assignment (Description for Syllabus Below) • Meet with a counselor at the McClammy Lab to discuss resources on campus and opportunities for connecting with those resources. • Requirements: 3 meetings with the counselor • Session 1: Intake & Paperwork • Session 2: Exploring interests and plans for college and after college • Session 3: Connecting with resources on campus • To complete this assignment, you must enter your contact information, including your class section number and instructor’s name and email address in the online referral system. Within 48 hours after you enter your information in the referral system, you will be contacted by a graduate student counselor working with the McClammy Lab to schedule a session. You and the counselor will work together to schedule your other two sessions. Once you have completed three sessions, the counselor will notify your COAD 1000 instructor that you have completed the sessions.
