  1. Cosmetology By: Hannah Ickes 5.11.11 4th hour

  2. Why Cosmetology? • I’ve chose cosmetology for many reasons. For a couple years now I’ve been wanting to do it. When I was growing up, my baby sitter did it and she loved it. I know a little bit about it now and it seems like a fun job! Being a cosmetologist means you can do hair, nails, makeup, and care for skin.

  3. Description • Cosmetologists are trained in a lot more than styling hair. In addition to knowing how to style hair and applying makeup, they are also trained to keep your hair, skin, and nails healthy and in good condition. • Cosmetologists who work on hair provide services like cutting long hair, straightening curly hair, or turning a brunette into a blonde. They also know what products to use to correct problems such as dandruff or dry and brittle hair.

  4. Working Conditions • Most cosmetologists are employed by salons, or own their own businesses. • Working hours for cosmetologists can be flexible, and some may be able to set their own schedules. Yet a cosmetologist might have to work evenings or weekends. Many cosmetologists work part-time, combining their jobs with family or other responsibilities. • Hairstyling can be hard work, physically. Cosmetologists are often on their feet for many hours at a time. • Cosmetologists also spend hours every day exposed to the chemicals used in hairstyling and nail care. Some of them develop sensitivities or allergies to the fumes.

  5. What it Takes • Some vocational schools and 2-year colleges offer general cosmetology programs, while others offer separate hairstyling, esthetics, and nail technician programs. There are also many private cosmetology schools. • Cosmetology programs range from about 9 months to 2 years. It’s possible to do the programs part-time, over a longer period. • Licensing for cosmetologists is mandatory in the US. Specific licensing requirements vary from state to state, but usually graduation from a state-recognized cosmetology school is necessary, followed by an exam. • A good sense of style is essential. • You should enjoy working closely with people, and be patient and sensitive to their needs and desires. • Learning business skills will help you get into a management position, and will certainly be necessary if you want to open your own salon.

  6. Job Outlook • Overall employment of barbers, cosmetologists, and other personal appearance workers is projected to grow much faster then the average for all occupations. • Employment of cosmetologists will increase by about 20%, faster then the average, while the number of barbers will increase by 12%, about as fast as the average. • Job opportunities generally should be good, particularly for licensed workers seeking entry-level positions. • A large number of job openings will come about from the need to replace workers who transfer to other occupations, retire, or leave the labor force.

  7. Earnings • Median hourly wages in May 2008 for cosmetologists, including tips and commission, were $11.13. The middle 50 percent earned between $8.57 and $15.03. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $7.47, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $20.41. • Salon professionals can average up to an annual salary of $50,000 including tips, with the median salary being around $12,500.00 to $35,000.00 per year. There are many factors, which can determine the earning potential of a Cosmetologist. • Your income potential can also be impacted by the commissions you make. Most cosmetologist work on a commission basis, on the other hand, a large source of income for the cosmetologist is received through tips. • Advancement usually takes the form of higher earnings.

  8. Technology • Modern technology plays its part in creating something that is bigger or better than before.  • The Blow Dryer- around 2 lbs, it allows people to dry hair in just as little as a few minutes. Compared to towel or air drying, it’s a big time saver. • The Flat Iron- Most go up to around 450 degrees in temperature, and with one swipe it smooth’s and straightens you hair. Also you can create cute hair styles with in a few minutes! • The Curling Iron- They offer consistent result for any hair type. Curling irons provide stylists with the right tool to create a wide variety of special curl types that are popular in today’s hair fashions.

  9. Summary • Yes, after doing some research on cosmetology, I’d still like to do it! • Cosmetology was the 11th thing on my list. • I’d like doing this job for the good income. • Also working with a lot or different people. • Learning about different tools, and hairstyles has me wanting to do the job too! • The one thing I wouldn’t like doing its standing for so long! • Also dealing with grumpy/moody customers!
