  2. Review • There are three ways to translate the superlative • Very • Most • -est

  3. Review • All superlatives, regardless of how they are formed, use 1st – 2nd declension endings.

  4. Review • The most common way to form a superlative is as follows: • Get the base • Add –issim- • Add 1st-2nd decl. endings so that the adjective agrees with the noun in gender, number and case.

  5. Adjectives that end in –er in the masculine, nominative singular • Take the word that ends in –er (it is always the first one in the list) • Add –rim- • Add 1st- 2nd decl. endings so that the adjective agrees with the noun in gender, number and case.

  6. NEW INFORMATION • There are six words that end in -listhat have a special superlative. • facilis • difficilis • dissimilis • similis • gracilis • humilis

  7. To form the superlative of these six words do the following: • drop the –is • add –lim- • add 1st-2nd decl. endings • gracil- • gracillim- • gracillimosequos

  8. Try these • most difficult wars (acc. pl.) • very thin cow (dat. sing.) • very humble men (nom. pl) • most similar friends (abl. pl.) bellum, belli; difficilis, difficile bos, bovis; gracilis, gracile vir, viri; humilis, humile amicus, amici; similis, simile

  10. NOTA BENE • Only these SIX words follow these steps • There are other words that end in –listhat do NOT use these steps. They would use the -issim- • nobilissimosequos

  11. ONE LAST THING • quam when it is put next to a superlative is used to express the highest degree possible and is translated as: as --------------- as possible For example: Marcus est quam laetissimus Marcus is as happy as possible
