Role of Your Counselor The counselors’ role is mainly one of student advocacy. Students come to counselors for help with a variety of issues in order to develop self esteem, self advocacy skills, help with family issues, crisis intervention, post secondary planning (which includes scheduling and four year plans), academic assistance including study skills, and numerous other issues in the realm of adolescent growth. As we assist students throughout the four year high school experience, our goal is to get every student to achieve academically, socially, and emotionally and we will work diligently with individual students and groups as we determine their needs.

High School Academic Placement • All Academic course placements are subject to change. Students are currently placed based on first semester and current grades in pre-requisite courses. • If final second semester grades in pre-requisite courses or 8th CRCT scores drop below the necessary grades to be placed in Honors level courses, students will be removed before the beginning of the 2011/2012 School Year.

Our Latin Program at NHS • Has a full, college preparatory curriculum, including AP. • Allows students, since SPEAKING IS NOT A FOCUS, to learn about myths, history, art, architecture, science, philosophy, and ethics, starting in Latin 1, day 1. • Takes multiple trips yearly to compete and win awards; this year, we have been invited to compete at HARVARD. • Yearly travels to both the state and national Latin conventions. • Has had 3 or more students attend the Governor’s Honor Program in Latin for each of the last 4 years(they take 15 Latin students from the whole state). • Has one of the most active clubs in all of NHS. (95% participation) WHY TAKE LATIN? Academic Advantages: Latin students have the highest SAT scores of any foreign language. (http://promotelatin.org/images/stories/pdf/Why/SAT2009-newreportdataforLatin.pdf) Many college counselors give greater weight to students who have Latin on transcripts. (http://promotelatin.org/images/stories/pdf/Why/TexasClassicalAssociationSurvey.pdf) Latin students have the highest college GPA of any foreign language students. (http://promotelatin.org) 90 % of English words two syllables or longer come from Latin. (http://promotelatin.org) At NHS, Latin allows students to achieve AP in 4 years, rather than the 5 it takes in other languages. Latin unlocks the key to understanding the language and culture of the western world; most significantly, English, spoken by ¼ of the world population.
