6 Ways To Maintain Fire Doors

Fire doors form a part of the passive fire protection. They are usually thicker and stronger than a normal door and stop the spread of fire to other areas of a building. They have a fire-resistance rating and function when closed. Fire doors and their components must be regularly checked by a competent individual. If the building is new, it should be checked more often according to the Fire Safety Order.<br>

  1. 6 WAYS TO MAINTAIN FIRE DOORS

  2. Legal Obligation Article 17 of the Fire Safety Order makes it a legal necessity to ensure that the fire doors and escape routes are correctly installed and maintained. A trained and competent person is required to check the fire doors at regular intervals. Any breach of prosecution will be a legal opposition.

  3. Checking Regularly Checking of fire doors in Ireland should be done after every six months. In the case of new buildings, the checking should be done more often. If there are large number of people using a fire door, you need to ensure whether any of its part has been damaged or not once a week.

  4. All Parts Should Be Checked A comprehensive check by a trained individual is not sufficient. All the parts of a fire door should be checked and inspected. For example, the gap between the frame and the door should be of right size, the smoke and intumescent seal should be in proper place, etc.

  5. Create A Fire Door Register If there are multiple fire doors in a building, and they don’t have the same inspection schedule, then it is useful to create a fire door register. This provides an overall information regarding the door, like components required, maintenance, checks required or undertaken, etc.

  6. Establish The Compatibility The components should be compatible with the fire door. If they not compatible, they are not fire-resistant and hence, should not be used. The components should be installed after checking the fire certification data sheet.

  7. Check Its Operation Fire doors in Ireland should be checked whether they are fully operational or not. Self-closing and self-latching must be fully operational. The door openers should function appropriately. These factors should be checked in the case of a fire rated door.
