  1. Starter Activities for Today “Engagement” 1) Which amendments in the Bill of Rights protect the rights of accused persons? (pp. 127-129) What are the six (6) amendments in the Bill of Rights that DO NOT deal with the rights of accused persons? (pp. 130-131) “Bell Ringer” Describe, in your own words, what you feel is the most important right/freedom guaranteed by the US Constitution in the Bill of Rights.

  2. General Class Discussion Questions What did the Anti-Federalists want put in the U.S. Constitution before they would agree to support its ratification? Why did they want it?

  4. “What Is Important About The Bill of Rights?”Chpt. 4, Sect. ½ pp. 120-131 Objectives: 1) SCOS Goal 2.07=I CAN describe some of the current problems associated with those rights guaranteed to all Americans by the Bill of Rights.

  5. “Why Is The First Amendment So Important?”“The 1st Amendment is important because it guarantees all Americans five (5) basic freedoms.”“What restrictions are placed on these rights?”**Provide one (1) restriction on each freedom**(p. 124)

  6. “What Amendments Deal With The Rights Of Accused Persons?” The amendments that deal with the rights of accused persons are the 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th. Over the next four (4) slides you will see two (2) questions about each amendment mentioned above. You are to write down the name of the amendment and the answers to the questions. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WRITE THE QUESTIONS!!!

  7. 4th Amendment Key questions: • Can the police search your home without a warrant? • Generally, what must the police have before they can search your home without your permission?

  8. 5th Amendment Key questions: • Do the police have to read a suspect their “rights” at the time of arrest? • What rights are given to an accused person by the 5th Amendment?

  9. 6th Amendment Key questions: • Is a person entitled to legal representation when in court over a criminal matter? If so, who is responsible for providing it? • What else is guaranteed by the 6th Amendment?

  10. 8th Amendment Key questions: • What does this amendment protect people against? • What punishment has been questioned the most as to whether or not it is a violation of this amendment?

Examples of Rights of the Accused**HONORS ASSIGNMENT** Using the internet or newspapers (or both) you are required to find ONE (1) news article dealing with each amendment concerning the rights of accused persons (4th, 5th, 6th, 8th Amendments) and provide the following information for each article: • Identify what amendment is represented by the article. • A short description of how the amendment is being represented.

  12. “What Other Amendments Are In The Bill Of Rights?” Homework Assignment: Students are to identify the rights guaranteed to them by the 1st Amendment, 2nd Amendment, 3rd Amendment, 7th Amendment, 9th Amendment, and 10th Amendment and describe IN DETAIL specific examples how these rights can be exercised.

  13. ****Key Point To Remember*******WRITE IT DOWN!!!!!*** No rights that we have are “absolute”. They can be limited when they interfere with the rights of others or during a time of national emergency.

  14. “Exit Ticket” • Identify who wanted the Bill of Rights put into the US Constitution and describe why they wanted them in there. • Describe as many legal protections given to accused persons by the 6th Amendment as you can. • Provide examples of when a persons legal rights can be limited.
