Solar Power converts sunlight in to electricity. Solar Power is the Earth’s most easily available energy and it is the fastest growing energy resource in the world.
Globally we use 4,800 GW of power. Just the Gobi Desert, if covered in solar panels, could supply all of the worlds energy needs.
In 2008 two of the first solar power farms were built in Germany and Portugal. Plans are now being made to build much larger solar farms in deserts and sunny places. The largest solar farm is in Florida, US which is a very sunny place.
Plans are now being made for Topaz Solar 550 MW Farm to be built in California, US. They should finish building it in 2014 and it will cost one billion US dollars. Solar panels are very expensive which is the only downside about solar energy.
In the UK many people are beginning to put solar panels on the roofs of their houses. My school in the UK had solar panels on the roof. The government help with the cost to encourage people to do this.
