What Does The Science of Ecology Study ? • The study of organisms and their interactions with their environment (biotic and abiotic factors) which determine distribution and abundance of the organisms.
Distribution is • The area a species inhabits Grizzly Bear distribution
Abundance is • The amount or number of a species The number of grizzly bears in Yellowstone NP
The Environment is • Surroundings of an organism with with which it interacts (includes biotic and abiotic factors)
What are Biotic and Abiotic Factors? • Biotic factors = living or once living • Abiotic factors = nonliving

Sunflower Niche • The ecological niche involves both the place where an organism lives and the roles that an organism does in its habitat. For example, the ecological niche of a sunflower growing in the backyard includes absorbing light, water and nutrients (for photosynthesis), providing shelter and food for other organisms (e.g. bees, ants, etc.), and giving off oxygen into the atmosphere.
