STEPS • STEP ONE: Draw from the bag which artist you will be informing the class about. Then research that artist!!! • STEP TWO: Fill in an outline. Next write a lead that will catch the audience’s attention. • STEP THREE: Write at least (3) details about your artist. Some questions to consider are: Who are they? What genre are they talented in? Why are they important or influential? Where are they from and or where do they live now? When did they make the news or become a notable artist? Are they still alive today… if not, why are they important still? • STEP FOUR: Wrap up your reasons with a great concluding sentence. • STEP FIVE: Present your findings to the class in 3 to 5 minutes & hand in your paragraph along with a visual.
Paragraph Outline Exemplar Topic: (Artist): Beyonce (SCOPE: March 9th 2009 – Beyonce Gives Back) Leading Sentence: Beyonce is a superstar and screen star who uses her celebrity status for good causes. Detail Sentence #1: In 2009, Beyonce was about to start her world tour and release her hit album I am … Sasha Fierce. Detail Sentence #2: Beyonce was born in Houston, Texas. Detail Sentence#3: Beyonce helped women with drug addictions at Phoenix House. Concluding Sentence: Beyonce has helped many people with illnesses and troubles and continues to be a notable artist for her contributions to the world. Quotations: “I know that what I give out comes back to me,” she explains. “How I treat people and the things I do, and the way I give back, comes back to me.”
OUTCOMES To BE ASSESSED • Speaking & Listening: You have presented your paragraph to the class using good speaking skills. (Eye contact, volume, etc…) & have informed your audience of your findings. Outcome 3.1 • Reading & Viewing: Gather information from print and non-print sources with speed and accuracy in order to have enough notes to complete a successful paragraph. Outcome 5.3 • Writing & Representing: Complete awritten paragraph that shows clear evidence of research on your artist. • Show a clear understanding of good conventions (spelling, punctuation, etc…) , as learned first term in your writing. Have a topic, detail and concluding sentence with at least 5 to 9 sentences to your paragraph. • Outcome 10.1 & 10.5
EXAMPLE: Beyonce • Beyonce is no small person to be messing with. She is “Sasha the Fierce”! Beyonce was born to be a megastar, beginning her career with Destiny's Child and later a solo career. She is well known and respected as a humanitarian and has helped many women, children and families with organizations such as; Phoenix House, Miami Children's Hospital, and The Gulf Coast Relief Fund. As well, she has served as an ambassador for many youth programs. Beyonce doesn’t just sing, her voice has helped raise more than $100 million dollars for cancer research. Beyonce herself has said, “I know that what I give out comes back to me,” she explains. “How I treat people and the things I do, and the way I give back, comes back to me.” This proves that Beyonce is more than just an artist, but a humanitarian.
