  1. Applied Physical Science Class #2 OBJECTIVE: to learn how to use measure properly using tools, to use measurements in formulas, and to introduce the concept of significant figures. We are likely aware of the English system of measuring length: Inches, feet, yards, and miles. We should be able to covert some of these in our heads too. 12 inches = 1 foot 3 feet = 1 yard 36 inches = 1 yard 5280 feet = 1 mile

  2. We will also become fully aware of the metric system of length: Millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers. 10 mm = 1 cm 100 cm = 1 m 1000 mm = 1 m 1000 m = 1 km

  3. When we will measure certain things, like length for one, we will use tools that require us to estimate with our eyes as close as we can to the actual measurement. With a ruler we can never be exactly correct in our measurements, but we can be close. There are real limits to how well we can see, and how well we can measure with certain tools.

  4. With this ruler, we can only measure to the closest line we can see with our eyes, then we will estimate out ONE MORE PLACE. Not two places, and we won’t be casual and say about, or disregard our duty to measure and estimate one place. Measuring properly is the basis of science. The foundation that all knowledge rests. I take this seriously, there are actual rules, and you must adhere to them. What does adhere mean?

  5. Get a handout labeled Handout #1 Now. It contains the rest of our work today. Get a ruler as well. We will measure in centimeters, and estimate to the nearest 10th of a centimeter for each measurement required. Measure the rectangle ABCD. Measure length AB, width BC, & diagonal BD

  6. Perimeter of a rectangle is the measure of length around the outside of the box. What is the perimeter of the box ABCD? Watch significant figures! Watch units!

  7. Area of a rectangle is L x W What is the area of our rectangle ABCD? Watch SF and units!

  8. When measuring, our measurements are proper to the correct number of significant figures. What you see, what you estimate (one extra place) and that’s it. Not less, not more exact. You can see up to a certain point, measure to that level of exactness. You can’t see more places than one with your eyes. If you need a better measurement, then you need a better tool. You cannot magically measure better than your tools will let you.

  9. Homework tonight! Do HW #2 AT HOME, TONIGHT. If you need to keep the ruler, bring it back tomorrow! Due Friday, for 10/10. Monday it’s worth only 8/10 points.
