  3. HISTORY • Most important part of the eval. Process • Serves as the base for the rest of the process • Special tests just confirm initial idea acquired during hx. • Effective communication is KEY • Category of questions to ask?

  4. HISTORY Cont’d • Things to inquire about… • Chief complaint • Location of pain • Date of occurrence • Symptoms (why not signs)? • Mechanism of injury • Past medical hx • Sounds heard? • Duration and type of pain

  5. Observation • Can begin as soon as the pt enters the room. • How so? • Gait… • Gross deformity • Ecchymosis • Effusion • Skin appearance? • Infection? • Signs?

  6. PALPATION • Definition? • Purpose? • Method of palpation? • Away from injury and work your way towards injury • Bones and ligaments 1st • Muscles and tendons 2nd

  7. PALPATION CONT’D • Palpate for… • Point tenderness a.k.a. TTP • Change in tissue density • i.e. muscle rigidity indicates? • Crepitus • Symmetry of muscles/joints • Increased tissue temperature • Means?

  8. PALPATION CONT’D • ROM • AROM • PROM • Cyriax’s rule states: • Pn in opposite directions of AROM and PROM is contractile tissue • Pn in the same direction in AROM and PROM is inert tissue

  9. PALPATION Cont’d • MMTs • Test muscle strength in all possible directions that joint can perform. • ALWAYS COMPARE EVERYTHING BILATERALLY • Demonstrate an MMT

ON Field Evals • Hx • Checking location of pn, MOI, symptoms, sounds heard, PMH • Observation • Is athlete conscious? • Athlete moving? • Position of athlete • Palpation • Bony alignment • Crepitus • Joint alignment • Swelling • Pn • Deficit in the muscles or tendons • ROM • MMT • Special tests • Ligamentous testing
