  3. ALDIS • ALDIS: Austrian LightningDetectionand Information System • Cooperation of OVE (Austrian Union of Electronics), Siemens and thefederation of locating and documatinglightnings in Europe • ALDIS deliversexactlightningfacts to weatherservices, insurancecompanies, experts and energysupplycompanies. • ALDIS was putintooperation in 1992, afteroneyear of testing. Sincethat ALDIS has registeredstormactivities all overAustria and has savedtheseinformation in a databank.

EUCLID • EUCLID: EUropeanCooperationforLIghtningDetection • EUCLID is a cooperation of different lihghtningdetectingcompanies all over Europe. • Members: Austria, Hungary, Germany, France, Finland, Luxembourg, Belgium, theNetherlands, Switzerland, Slovenia, Italy, Poland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, …

  5. Lightning-radar-national • In Austriathereare 8 so called LS7000 sensores, thatregisterthelightningactivities. • Themeasuredinformationis send digitally to a lihtningprocessor. • Eachsensor has a registeringradius of 400 km. Consequentlyeverylightningsignalisregisteredby at least 4 sensores. • Theexactness of measurementisabout100 m.

  6. Lightning-radar-international • The 8 ALDIS-sensoresareintegrated in the European EUCLID-net. • Thepicture on the right shows all lightningsensores in Europe (red points).

  7. Lightning-radar-Howitworks • moreinformation: time, polarisation (positiv or negativ), poweramplitude kA. • For calculatingthelocation of thelightningyouhaveto usetrigonometry.

  8. Beginning of lightning • Thelightningdischarge has itsorigin in thechargedstormcloud. • Withinthestormcloudthevertical wind produces a separation of charges. • Thedischargefollows 3 steps: leadinglightning, catchingdischarge, • maindischarge.

  9. Different kinds of lightning • Cloud-cloud-lightning • Cloud-ground-lightning • Ground-cloud-lightning • Positive and negative lightning • Kugel-lightning • Elms-fire • Line-lightning • Area-lightning

  10. Statisticalevaluation • In thepicturetheaveragelightningactivityduring 1992 and 2001 isshown. • Thereareimportantregionallydifferences.
