The History of GP Georgia Pacific was founded in Augusta, Ga. In 1927 by Owen Cheatham. When GP first started, it was known as the Georgia Hardwood Lumber Company.
History... Georgia-Pacific began transporting lumber to rail stations using mules and wagons. On January 27, 1949, Georgia-Pacific stock became available in the New York Stock Exchange
History... In 1948, Georgia Hardwood Lumber Company was changed to Georgia-Pacific Plywood and Lumber Co. Then, in 1951, G-P shortened its name to just Georgia-Pacific Plywood Co. Throughout the years, G-P purchased many other lumber companies throughout the U.S. Purchased Hammond Lumber Company in 1956 for $75 million Bought Booth-Kelly Lumber Company for $ 93 million
History... In the 1960’s, G-P’s first tissue product, Coronet, was introduced. In 1986, G-P introduced Angel Soft into the bath tissue market. In 1982, G-P moved its headquarters from Portland,Ore., to Atlanta, Ga. This is the new Atlanta headquarters under construction.

GP’s Community Involvement During 2000-2001, G-P’s investments supported housing, historic preservation, arts, youth development, and safety within the community. G-P works with non-profit organizations such as, Habitat for Humanity and the United Ways.
GP’s Community Involvement • After the events of September 11, G-P donated plywood and other paper products to New York City gov’t agencies, and contributed $100,000 to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. • G-P is also committed to environmental priorities such as, resource conservation (recycling), parks and recreation areas, and environmental education.
