  1. The Foundation of the Text • 3 seeing that his divine power has granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and virtue; • 4 whereby he has granted unto us His precious and exceeding great promises; that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust.

  2. The Hub of the Text • 5 Yea, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply virtue; and in virtue knowledge; • 6 and in knowledge self-control; and in self-control patience; and in patience godliness; • 7 and in godliness brotherly kindness; and in brotherly kindness love.

  3. Motivations for the Text • 8 For ifthese things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful • 9 For he that lacks these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. • 10 Wherefore, brethren, give the more diligence to make your calling and election sure: • for if you do these things, you shall never stumble • 11 for thusshall be richly supplied unto you the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Peter’s Inspired Intent/Purpose • 12 Wherefore I shall be ready always to put you in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, • 13 And I think it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; • 15 Yea, I will give diligence that at every time ye may be able after my decease to call these things to remembrance.

God’s Part: • Divine power freely granted all things MEANS • Precious/exceeding great promises MOTIVATION • Partakers of the Divine nature GOAL • Our Part • Add to faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, Love • Blessings: • Not idle or unfruitful… clear sight; never stumble; richly supplied entrance into eternal kingdom • Peter’s Goal: • any time after his death we can call these things to mind

  7. It is Best to Think We must Relearn Everything! • Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Cor. 5:17-18

When we Know we Don’t Know • Journey to a new place - Map. • Using a new product, - Manual • Cooking a new food - Recipe • Learning to Drive a Car - Guidance • There is no shame to such ignorance. • But there is a great deal of discomfort • Need to approach such ignorance with humility; submission and trust in those who do know.

  9. It is Best to Think We must Relearn Everything! • And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Rom 12:1-2 • Everything Relearned, Retested, • Everything Reevaluated, Renewed

  10. It is Best to Think We must Relearn Everything! • Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king, who knows not how to receive admonition any more. Eccl. 4:13

  11. Knowledge • Walking • from what we can see, • what we understand, • what we have mastered • Into • what we do not yet see • What we do not yet understand • what we have not yet mastered.

  12. Humility: The Beginning of Wisdom • O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man who walks to direct his own steps. Jer 10:23 • There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. Pr 14:12

  13. Humility: The Beginning of Wisdom • Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Mt 7:14 • My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Hosea 4:6

  14. Humility: The Beginning of Wisdom • Give diligence to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, handling aright the word of truth. 2Tim 2:15 • It Never Ends • A continuous process until we die • Everything we learn prepares us for more

  15. Knowledge • When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, 11 Discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you, 12 To deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks perverse things, Pr. 2:10-12
