Holy trinity GREEN SCHOOLS’ COMMITEE: ENERGY
ALL ABOUT ENERGY • There are many different forms of energy. • There are many efficient and renewable ways to create energy. • One is by using turbines. • The wind blows the turbine. • Another way is using water. • Turbines turn under the water. • The water turns the turbines.
ALL ABOUT ENERGY • Solar energy is another renewable source of energy. It uses solar panels to create energy.
CURRENT ENERGY PRODUCTION • We should be using renewable sources of energy more than fossil fuels like gas ,coal ,peat and oil. • Most of the fossil fuels we use are imported . We should be spending our money on solar panels or turbines and other renewable sources of energy.
THE ENVIRONMENT • Fossil fuels are harmful to the environment. They can cause holes in the ozone layer and greenhouse gases, such as Carbon Dioxide, which can melt ice caps.
OUR WORK SO FAR • We have worked on trying to turn off lights at a certain time of day. • We have been reminding teachers to turn off laptops etc. at breaks. • We have turned down the thermostat. • We have turned the heating off at an earlier time.
OUR ACTION PLAN • We have energy busters in the school that walk around the school and check if laptops, whiteboard and lights are off. • We are writing letters to Phil Hogan, the Minister for the Environment. • Make sure that we have draft excluders for every room that needs them in the school.
OUR ACTION PLAN We need to inform the community about: • Using renewable sources of energy. • Tips on how to save energy at home. • http://www.greenschoolsireland.org/energy/what-you-can-do.345.html • http://www.youandyourmoney.ie/content.asp?contentid=1510
QUICK TIPS • Turn off appliances when you are going to bed/not using them. • Don‘t put them on standby. • Shut down computers when you are not using them. • Keep windows and doors closed. • Turn lights off and open blinds and let natural light in. • Don’t have the heat on for a long time.
REDUCE • Turning your thermostat down by 1°C can reduce your heating bills by 10%. • Using energy efficient light bulbs uses ¼ of electricity as normal light bulbs and last up to 12 times longer! • We can all make a difference! • Stay green and energy lean! • Holy Trinity Green Schools’ Committee, over and out.
