  1. BUDDHISM LESSON #2 Buddhist Teachings

  2. Buddhist Teachings • Buddhism is such a diverse religion. You will find though, that every Buddhist shares some common beliefs: • Three Jewels • Three Characteristics of Existence • The Four Noble Truths • The Eightfold Path

  3. Three Jewels The purpose of the three jewels (places or refuge and safety from danger) is to guide followers along the right path. They are: 1) The Buddha: - “the awakened one,” Prince Siddhartha after enlightenment. 2) The Dharma:- the truth, the teachings of Buddha 3) The Sangha:-the Buddhist community

  4. Three Characteristics of Existence (Central Beliefs) • 1) Annica (Impermanence): belief that nothing is permanent and everything is always changing. There is no rest, except when you enter nirvana. If you chose to believe in permanency, this will lead to dissatisfaction and suffering. • 2) Dukkha (Suffering): all life involves suffering; it’s apart of life. Even those who lead happy lives will eventually have to face pain. • 3) Anatta (Not self): one must get beyond the egotism of “me”/”mine” and detach possessions

  5. Four Noble Truths (Central Beliefs) • 1) All people suffer (dukka):- we all hurt physically and emotionally • 2) Suffering is caused by desire, greed, ignorance and attachment: people can adapt to physical pain, but unfulfilled longings, and cravings make our suffering deep

  6. Four Noble Truths (Central Beliefs) • 3) We must remove suffering: taming our desires requires a lot of discipline • 4) Ending suffering: To end suffering, you must achieve enlightenment, which will result in unending peace and freedom from all desire. You can end suffering by following the Noble Eightfold Path

  7. Eightfold Path and the Dharma Wheel (Central Beliefs) • The centre of the wheel represents nirvana • Eight spokes represent the Eightfold Path • Each spoke intersects the centre, meaning all eight paths are needed to reach nirvana • One must follow the eightfold path, to end suffering and reach nirvana
