2. Coaches What do coaches want from officials? • Know the rules • Hustle / Position • Listen to them talk What should you do? • Study Rules/Situations • Stay in shape and work hard on court • Listen when they talk to you

3. Before the Game You’re always in the coaches eye from the moment you arrive • Be on time • Immediately build rapport & respect • Look & act like an official • Always in proper uniform – look sharp • Be professional, courteous, and respectful but… • Never fraternize or act overly friendly

The Coaches Box • Rule Book: Pg 16, Rule 1, Section 13, Art. 2 • Table side, from the 28 ft line down 14 ft (Maximum length) to the end line • UIL: Basketball Manual 2009-10, Regular Season Regulations, Pg 25 • Follow Rule Book but limited to 6 ft box, centered around the 1st or 2nd seat on the bench

5. The Coaches Box • Before the game when you check the book or introduce yourself – remind the coach about coaching with in the box by saying: • ”Coach, can you help us out tonight by coaching from the box?” • Say it calmly, professionally & respectfully

The Coaches Box • During the game… • Use discretion and work with the coach • As the game is going on the coach is talking to you, acknowledge you hear them by saying: • “”Ok coach, I hear you.” • When you stop next to them and they have question, listen to them • “”Good point coach, I will watch for that” • “”This is what I saw, what did you see?”

7. The Coaches Box • If the first few steps do not work, you have to take action. If the coach continues to walk and talk as they please, it will only get worse! • If the coach continues a running dialogue or is yelling & arguing with you: • “”Coach I need you to work with us. If you have question we will answer it, please don’t yell across the floor to us”

8. The Coaches Box • If that does not help, give them a warning (calm and professional) • “”Coach, we have heard enough from you tonight. You’re warned.” • If the coach continues from there… • Technical foul • It is an emotional time for all. Stay calm and collect and report it like any other foul.

The Coaches Box • After a technical of any type, the head coach loses the privilege of standing in the coach’s box and must remain seated • If the coach continues and must be given a second technical, they are ejected • They must leave the playing area by sight and sound • Get away from the situation and get the game administrator to help you • You can’t give a third technical foul to an ejected coach • Do not continue the game until they leave.

10. Team Control • Rule Book: Rule 4, Section 12, Art. 2-6. Pg 30 • Starts when player has control of the ball and continues while the player is dribbling & during an interrupted dribble • While loose, it always remains in control of the last team had control • Team control ends when: • Other team gets control • Ball is in flight for a try • Ball is dead

11. Team Control There is no team control when: • The ball is dead • During a throw in • A jump ball • Ball in flight for a try • During a rebound

12. Team Control If a foul occurs while there is teamcontrol: • You penalize it like a common foul (goes against the player and team) • If the team that got fouled is not in the bonus or is in the bonus • You do not shoot bonus free throws • You award the ball out of bounds nearest the spot of the foul

Team Control If a foul occurs and there is no team control: • You penalize it like a common foul (goes against the player and team) • If the team that got fouled is not in the bonus • You award the ball out of bounds nearest the spot of the foul • If the team the got fouled is in the bonus • The player that got fouled shoots bonus free throws

14. Team Control – Examples • Player A2 sets a ball screen for player A1. While setting the screen, player A2 fouls B2. Team B is in the bonus. The officials rules this foul a team control foul and does not award player B2 with any bonus free throws. Is the official correct? Answer: Yes. No bonus free throws on a team control foul.

15. Team Control – Examples 2) Player A1 is driving to the basket on a fast break. Player A1 passes the ball to player A2 for a jump shot. Player A1 continues his drive and crashes into player B2, who had established legal guarding position. Team B is in the bonus. The official rules this a common foul and player B2 shoots bonus free throws. Is the official correct? Answer: No. During a pass there is still team control.

16. Team Control – Examples 3) During a rebound, player A1 pushes player B1 in the back to get the rebound. Team B is in the bonus. The official rules this a common foul and allows B1 to shoot bonus free throws b/c there was no team control on the rebound. Is the official correct? Answer: Yes. We shoot bonus free throws when there is no team control.

17. Unusual Play 1) At the end of the game, player A1 is attempting a last second 3 point shot. As player A1 is shooting, he is fouled by B1. The horn sounds followed by player A1 releasing the 3 point try. The basket goes in. How is this play penalized and scored? Answer: You penalize the foul against player B1 and award A1 3 free throws for being fouled on a try. You do not score the basket because the try was not released before the horn sounded.

18. Unusual Play 2) Player A1 is fouled on a 2 point try and is awarded two free throws. Player A1 shoots the first free throw and makes it. During the dead ball player B2 is given a technical foul. In confusion, the official awards player A1 two free throws for the foul attempt and two free throws for the technical foul, all free throws were made. The ball is inbounded and player A3 hits a jump shot for 2 points. The table signals the officials that player A1 shot 1 too many free throws. Is this a correctable error? If so, how do we correct it?

19. Unusual Play Answer: Yes, this error can be corrected at this time. The error is awarding an unmerited free throw (player A1 should have only shot 4 total free throws and not 5). The error was found in the correct time b/c it was discovered before the 1st dead ball became live after the clock was properly started (after the throw in by Team A [clock starts] then Team A’s made basket by player A3). Take one point from Team A and resume play at the point of interruption with Team B in bounding the ball after the made basket by Team A.
