  1. EVIL SUFFERING OF THE INNOCENT NATURAL MORAL Natural Disasters Disease Crime

  2. MISFORTUNE, PAIN AND DEATH Judaism and Christianity Islam and Hinduism There is God QUESTIONING: ACCEPTANCE: WHY AND HOW TO GET OUT OF IT? SUCH IS KARMA/ THE WILL OF ALLAH Take it on the chin For my own sins To develop my character To bring me closer to Christ Because God knows what he is doing

  3. MISFORTUNE, PAIN AND DEATH BUDDHISM TAOISM There is no God WE SUFFER BECAUSE OUR MINDSET IS WRONG SUFFERING IS NATURAL AND PASSING We get attached to things, people, our own health and life. We suffer when these are taken away. But if we knew from the start that nothing is permanent we would have had no grounds for suffering. In nature, all things are balanced by the cycle of opposites: day and night, summer and winter, good and evil. If there is good, there must be evil and vice versa. Without evil there can be no good. When we endure evil we must know that good is on the way. When we are enjoying good we must know that evil will follow. SUFFERING IS PART OF LIFE SUFFERING IS IN THE MIND

  4. Homework: • “Evil proves there is no God.” Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. Refer to religious arguments in your answer. • Produce a page-long critical essay • Use the examples of evil that we have covered • Discuss evil in Western and Eastern thought • For Western perspective, refer to various theodicies • For Eastern perspective, refer to Buddhism and, should you wish, to Taoism.
