The Search for Everlasting Life By: Tatyana Fulmore Period 1
Gilgamesh • Gilgamesh is the king of Uruk and the hero of the epic. Uruk Gilgamesh
After the death of Gilgamesh’s dear friend Enkidu, Gilgamesh finds himself dealing with a situation that he cannot control. He also experiences emotion he has never experienced before. Gilgamesh grieving over Enkidu.
Later Gilgamesh decides to go on a search for Utnapishtim. Utnapishtim had been taken by the gods and sent to live in Dilmun, the garden of the sun and granted him everlasting life. Utnapishtim
On his journey to Utnapishtim, Gilgamesh gets stopped by Man-Scorpions who guard the gates to everlasting life. One of the Man-Scorpions sees that Gilgamesh is unhappy and asks him his reason for traveling so far. Gilgamesh and the Man-Scorpions.
Gilgamesh responded by saying he has come for his dear friend Enkidu, who he misses dearly and finds his life incomplete without. He also tells the guards that he has come for Utnapishtim who has been granted everlasting life. Soon enough the guards let him go through the mountain of Mashu. Mountain of Mashu
Gilgamesh continues on his journey to Utnapishtim and he must travel 12 leagues in darkness. He then reaches the garden and runs into Shamash, the sun god and judge and giver of laws. Later he is sent to Siduri, a divine wine maker and brewer.
Gilgamesh still continues on his journey to everlasting life, but Siduri tells him that every man is guaranteed death and that he should live the life he already has, Gilgamesh thinks otherwise.
After the advice that Siduri and Utnapishtim had given Gilgamesh, he still takes the everlasting life.
