Hoggard High School Philip McGinnis UNCW Spring ‘08 Psy 451
Contact information • Ms. Tammy Pruden • 910-620-1978 • Hoggard High School • 910-350-2072 • 4305 Shipyard Blvd. Wilmington, NC
Mission Statement • To provide an opportunity for students with significant cognitive disabilities to learn academic and social skills in order to become successful at school and in the community.
Population Served • Ms. Pruden’s class consists of between 15 to 25 exceptional children each year, ranging from the ages of 13 to 21. • They may be classified as a Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior for multiple academic years.
My responsibilities at Hoggard • On Mondays, I would arrive in the afternoon and participate in physical fitness activities with the students. • During this time I would act as a supervisor, participant, and mentor for any of the students I interacted with. • Usually I was interacting with multiple students at once, and I was entrusted with the responsibility of each of their safety.
My Responsibilities at Hoggard (Part 2) • One convenience of this site was their involvement with UNCW. • On Wednesdays, I met with the class at Hanover Gym (Trask Coliseum) for a class that taught basic health and hygiene as well as physical fitness and life skills. • I would sit in on classes, make sure students participated and paid attention, and also be involved with any physical activities during the class.
My Responsibilities at hoggard (part 3) • On Friday’s I was able to spend a full day with the class. This involved morning activities, lunch, outdoor activities, gym, and preparation for leaving for the day. • During my full days at Hoggard, I would help students with writing, reading, math, and life skills assignments. • I would participate in fun learning activities when there was a break in between assignments. • I would monitor the students as we moved from different areas around the school and assist any students who needed help moving locations.
A Few Important Fyi’s • Ms. Pruden and her staff are very friendly and a pleasure to work with. • The students are extremely friendly, enthusiastic, and fun to be around. • You are required to wear some form of khaki or dress pants (no jeans allowed). • There are frequent visitors/assistants to the classroom so you will have help, and you will see a number of unfamiliar faces for the first few weeks.
Why did I choose hoggard? • I chose Hoggard because I was unsure about my abilities to work with a population of exceptional children. I wanted to see how/if I could reach this population and how it would affect me personally.
Would I recommend this site? • YES! I would recommend this site. I thought this site would be suited best for a specific type of person, but I have come to believe that anyone can gain a life changing experience from working with Ms.Pruden and her students. • Walk into this site with an open mind and a genuine desire to help, and you will walk away with a new perspective on yourself and this population.
