  1. The Battle of..... Ortona December 20th - December 28th 1943

  2. Combatants • The battle was between Canada and Germany. • the German 1st parachute division and Canada's 1st infantry division. • The operation code name “little Stalingrad”.

  3. The Plan German soldiers were commanded by Hitler to defend Ortona because it was one of Italy’s few useable water ports for docking Allied ships. Adolf Hitler said, “Fight for every last house and tree”. They wanted to drive the Allies out of Italy. Germans wanted to channel the Canadians along only one road and to slaughter them in a fatal funnel killing field. Houses were booby trapped and rigged for demolition. Machine gun posts were placed in the rubble piles

  5. Canada’s role • Canada won the battle. The Canadians fought with skills and determination using tactics such as mouse-holing to kill Germans. without the Italian front, Germans could have shifted valuable resources to western and eastern fronts. Mouse Holing : soldiers create access to neighboring rooms or buildings by blasting or tunneling through a wall

  6. How Canada Won: Canadians won the battle because they destroyed many German troops. They demolished a building on top of two German squads which killed them all. After eight days of fighting the Germans lacked reinforcements and left.

  7. Consequences • Canadians: • 650 casualties • Germans: the 1st Parachute Division reported 455 casualties
