Why Use Business Partnerships? • To keep it real. • To add depth to the classroom. • Professional /industry standards • New mentoring figures • To give students a chance to make pathways for themselves • New ideas! • Taking education outside of the walls
Use Business Partners for Depth • Can you incorporate businesses into what you are already doing? • Look beyond the typical class lecture / demonstration / field trip. • Can businesses help you with personal learning plans? Teachers as Advisors? (ex: psychiatry internship)
Let’s talk about internships… What do businesses expect from long-term arrangements?
School vs. Workplace: In School: In the Workplace: • Students can choose their level of performance (A, B, etc) • Highly structured environment with lots of directions • Individual effort and grades. • Teacher expectations. Flunk. • Less initiative required. • Lots of breaks/vacations. • Lots of feedback. • “A-level” work required at all times • Highly unstructured; many tasks with few directions. Problem-solving /critical thinking skills crucial. • Team effort. Team results. • Boss’s expectations. Fired! • Lots of initiative required. • Less freedom of choice on scheduling. • Infrequent feedback…unless something is wrong!

Starting a New Work-Based Program? • Use your resources…do you have a parent group who can help you get started? What can your students do to help get things rolling? • Talk a lot in the beginning about “timing”. • Have a system in place for collecting “leads”. • In your planning, try to move from “needing resources” to “being a resource”. • Be persistent and follow-up on leads. • Legal issues… • Plan for the unexpected…
Insider Tips… • Keep a log or simple database of businesses that you are using. WHY? Don’t burn out a good contact. Likewise, don’t neglect a relationship, either. • Remember, partnerships are two-way streets. If a business contacts YOU about a need, help them navigate the school. • Keep a simple list of your activities…great data for applying for future grants.
A few Reminders… • Partnerships are not “one-size-fits all”. Each business will have different reasons for partnering with your school. • Businesses are “people”. The best way to learn to navigate through it is from the people inside. • Thus – a good relationship requires talking, collaboration, relationship building, trust and time. • Start small. Poll your business people about small, safe, steps that they are willing to take. And then help them take them. • Pay it back. Thank you notes, news stories, etc.
