Select ONE Topic, Event or Person • Within the ecclesial document, must have occurred prior to 1400 • Analyze role of your selection within the context of the document • Brief background on document and selected topic • Where does the historical event/person/idea it occur in the document • Why is this important to the contemporary argument in the document • How might this be used pastorally? • Note: as long as the topic is centered in history prior to1400, does not have to be something explicitly covered in class
Example: William of St. Theirry • Mystic and Cistercian (1085-1148); close friends with Bernard of Clairvaux • Forced by Bernard into being an abbot, then abdicated this role to spend time in prayer and study • Like Bernard wrote a commentary on Song of Songs, among other works • Like Bernard, wrote against Peter Abelard and his insistence that reason is a prerequisite to faith (I must understand in order that I might believe) • William emphasized importance of love in coming to a true understanding of God; • In Lumen FideiWilliam is called upon as a witness to the importance of love with reason to arrive at a genuine belief in God (Para 27) • Pastoral use: Love as a source of truth; St. Paul, Rom 10:10 “One believes with the heart” (referenced in Lumen Fidei, 26)
Panel and Paper Format • Panels NO MORE than 5 min per speaker • Use PowerPoint (ONLY 3 Slides) ONLY IF you are sure it will work • Papers about 5 pages • Let me know what document and topic you will be working on by Tues, Nov 19.
