Awards of Special Interest Kopchick Fellowship Applications 1. Are reviewed in the Fall Cycle through the Common Application 2. Important eligibility criteria for these awards Must have already submitted PhD candidacy petition Have not yet finished fourth doctoral year at GSBS Should plan to be enrolled for at least two more years
Awards of Special Interest Mercedes Benz of the Woodlands Scholarship 1 award for a Pre-candidacy doctoral student 1 award for a Masters student. (MS or SMS) Sylvan Rodriguez Scholarship in honor of George Stancel 1 award for MS/SMS or Pre-candidacy doctoral student
Important Changes Eligibility of Previous GSBS Award Winners Students who won a ”funds to student” awards in the last year are not eligible for 2019 Fall Awards.

Application Materials Donor Statement - 150 words Non-Scientific Language Demonstrates your ability to communicate about science to the public Focus on long-term goals and significance
Application Materials Curriculum Vitae Format carefully. Have someone review it. Be sure to include all posters and presentations Detail your activities (outreach, leadership,etc) Denote, or separate, what you’ve done at GSBS
Application Materials Specific Aims and Progress Report 1 page Specific Aims – follow NIH style 1 page Research Progress Report Plus: 1 page for ONE figure (multi –panel is OK) Bibliography does not count toward page limits
Application Materials Justification for Previous Winners – If you have won any GSBS award before (more than 1 year ago). Explain what parts of your CV and progress report happened AFTER you applied for that award. Note: this item is not required if you haven’t won an award.
Application Materials Advisory Committee Meeting Report (post-meeting) Most recent meeting – 3 page report If you took the candidacy exam more recently, you may submit the report from the exam. No meetings yet? - submit one of your tutorial evaluations.
Application Materials Charlene Kopchick Statement – Describe why you qualify for this award. General Eligibility Statement – Review award criteria and tell us about why you qualify for specific awards. (Research area, outreach, leadership).
Review Process - Overview • 2 Faculty reviewers assigned per application • All students are ranked • Committee meets to discuss rankings • Final rankings set by committee • Students are matched to awards based on rank and donor intent
Award Match • Assignments are made based on donor intent • Student’s interest in award (Eligibility Statement) • Area of Research • Stage in training • Other award-specific criteria • Assignment Order • Start with highest ranked students and fill slots by: • Size of Award (largest awards top students) • Narrowness of donor criteria Tip – If you believe you are well-suited to a particular award tell us why in your General Eligibility Statement.
