Transport of molecules againsta concentration gradient (from regions of low concentration to regions of high concentration) with the aid of proteins in the cell membrane and energy from ATP Active Transport
Carrier proteins move substances from low concentration to a higher concentration Ex: Sodium-Potassium Pump • 2 Na+ pumped out of the cell • 2K+ pumped into the cell Cell Membrane Pumps
Importing larger quantities of materials by infoldings of the cell membrane • Phagocytosis: “cell eating” • Cell membrane surrounds the food and buds off a vacuole. Lysosomes then secrete enzymes into a vacuole to digest food Endocytosis
