ENVIRONMENTAL DYNAMICS • In 2004, Tennessee’s State Constitution was amended to allow a state lottery • Currently, I-SATE at the University of Memphis estimates 155,788 problem gamblers & 64,743 pathological gamblers in TN • In 2005, Tennessee’s SSA contracted with 2 traditional A&D treatment agencies & 1 University for gambling counseling • Behavioral health providers in TN have not received gambling specific training for assessment, treatment, relapse or continuing care.

Fundamentals of Solution • Collaborate with the Ohio Council on Problem Gambling for training & supervision by National Certified Gambling Counselors • Submit training proposal to the “responsible gaming” community for funding • Provide gambling specific training in the 3 grand divisions in Tennessee • Utilizing the National Council on Problem Gambling standards develop a certification process in TN

  5. Targeted participants include: 837 Licensed A&D Abuse Counselors, 2,478 Licensed Clinical Social Workers, 1,625 Licensed Professional Counselors & others in the traditional A&D field. Provide Best Practices in: Assessment of co-occurring disorders, Crisis interventions & gambling treatment, Gambling treatment strategies for gamblers & families Gambling treatment planning, & recovery skills to address this addictive behavior Budget & financial development Paradigm Shift

Gambling Training Goals Through this gambling training plan, participants will: 1) Define theoretical components of solution-oriented counseling;2) Identify the significant differences between traditional and solution-oriented treatment;3) Apply these methods in treatment of problem gambling; 4) Demonstrate the therapeutic techniques necessary to apply for National Gambling Certification.

Gambling Training Budget Grant Request In-kind • Year 1 Expenses $75,017.50 $19,700.00 • Year 2 Expenses $37,550.00 $16,800.00 • Grant request focuses on a trainer coordinator and consultant fees for expert trainers. • Participant registrations will off-set future training expenses provided by TN gambling expert trainers.
