Respiration Take A Deep Breath
Words to Know • Respiration- exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between living cells and environment • Respiratory System: organs whose function is to take in oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide • Pharynx-throat (passage from mouth to larynx and esophagus • Larynx-area of throat that contains vocal cords and produces vocal sounds • Trachea-the tube that connects the larynx to the lungs • Bronchus-one of the two tubes that connect the lungs with the trachea • Alveoli-any of the tiny air sacs of the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.
Respiration • Divided into 2 parts Breathing-involved inhaling and exhaling Cellular Respiration-chemical reactions that release energy from food. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc1YtXc_84A
Pathway of Air • Nose-main passageway pharynx or throat esophagus goes to stomach larynx leads eventually to lungs contains the vocal cords Trachea or windpipe splits into two branches called bronchi which each connect to a lung Lungs
Lungs • Inside your lungs, the bronchi branch into bronchiloes. • The bronchioles lead to tiny sacs called alveoli. • See figure 2 page 621
Purpose of Respiration • Breathing • Cellular respiration-cells use oxygen to get energy out of glucose molecules.
