Respirator Selection based on OSHA APFs Scott Shinn, CIH, Technical Service Specialist, 3M Company
AGENDA • Types of Respiratory Protection • Definitions • Respirator Selection Process • Examples of Acceptable Respiratory Protection
Respiratory Protection • Air Purifying Respirator • Negative Pressure Respirator
Respiratory Protection • Air Purifying Respirator • Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR)
Respiratory Protection • Atmosphere Supplying Respirator
Respiratory Protection • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
Definitions • Assigned Protection Factor (APF) • the workplace level of respiratory protection that a respirator or class of respirators is expected to provide to employees when the employer implements a continuing, effective respiratory protection program.
Definitions • Maximum Use Concentration (MUC) • the maximum atmospheric concentration of a hazardous substance from which an employee can be expected to be protected when wearing a respirator, and is determined by the APF of the respirator and the exposure limit of the hazardous substance. (APF X OEL) OEL = Occupational Exposure Limit
Definitions • Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) • an atmosphere that poses an immediate threat to life, would cause irreversible adverse health effects, or would impair an individual's ability to escape from a dangerous atmosphere.
Respiratory Protection Program Per 29 CFR 1910.134 Written Respiratory Protection Program must include… Procedures for selecting respirators Medical evaluation Fit testing Use of respirators Maintenance and care of respirators Breathing air quality and use Training Program evaluation Recordkeeping
Respirator Selection Process • Exposure Assessment • Typically determined through air monitoring • Determine APF Required • Concentration in Air ÷ OEL (C/OEL) • APF Table • Other Considerations
