  1. What do the Civil Society Delegations to UNITAID do?... Goal: • To make prevention, diagnostics, and treatment for HIV/AIDS, TB, and malariamore accessible to poor and vulnerable populations in developing countries, by improving the markets for better-adapted, quality products at lower prices. • Bring country and community-level knowledge and experience to inform Board decisions Civil Society Delegations to UNITAID Board

Objectives – Accountability and Consultation • To ensure effective and inclusive participationof NGOs and Communities representatives in UNITAID official meetings • To raise awareness among Civil Society actors of UNITAID’s role in the global health architecture, and support representative and informed engagement of Civil Society on UNITAID-related issues and selection of projects for funding • To enable the NGOs and Communities Board delegations to implement robust systems and processes which ensure accountability to the broad constituencies they represent (e.g. evaluation) Civil Society Delegations to UNITAID Board

  3. ....and how do they represent me? • Participation • 8+ Civil Society representatives selected from stakeholder groups to attend bi-annual Board and 3-day civil society pre-Board meetings • Consultation • Teleconferences • Document review • ‘Learning sessions’ • Pre-meetings (as above) • Feedback • Communiqués (& teleconferences) • Liaison officer – answer any Civil Society queries and facilitate input to Board members • Organised around 2 stakeholder groups • Contact Group – 200+ members. Open to ALL Communities and NGOs representatives • Communities Support Team – core group of Communities delegation working to track UNITAID products reaching communities and facilitate country-level dialogue Civil Society Delegations to UNITAID Board

Key Civil Society delegations achievements 2010-12 • UNITAID funding of game-changing diagnostics projects • $50 million – increase access to innovative point-of-care diagnostics for HIV (viral load, EID, CD4) • $30 million – geneXpert roll-out /price reduction • Civil Society delegations fought for UNITAID support of diagnostics – especially Viral Load – over several years • UNITAID support of delegations’ advocacy priorities • Innovative financing including Financial Transaction Tax (FTT) • Medicines Patent Pool • Access to medicines issues – speaking out on EU-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) • Development of Communities’ Support Team • Strengthen own consultation and accountability activities • Open to wide Contact Group • 2 robust performance evaluations of Board members, incorporating feedback from Civil Society Civil Society Delegations to UNITAID Board
