Background of thecompetition • Best organic farmer and best organic product competition held since 2010, planned also in 2014 • Consumers favorite organic product is selected • Financed by the Ministry of Agriculture • Organised by the Organic Farming Foundation in cooperation with Organic Farming Platform and Estonian Culinary Institute EMSA 2014
Background of thecompetition Time frame • end of May – announcement of thecompetition • end of June– deadlineforapplicatonsforbestorganic farm • mid-August – deadlineforapplicatonsforbestorganicproduct • mid-September – announcement of thewinners in Estonian Open Air Museum at the Estonian Breadday EMSA 2014
Criteria for participation - farm - Has been organic for at least two years; - Sells for at least some part of their production with reference to organic farming, so that it reaches the end user as organic; - The company is in good shape, including manure and waste management; - Where animals are kept, their welfare is guaranteed (for example animals are not tethered, they have enough space, have access to exercise areas); - It is not last year's best organic producer contest winner. EMSA 2014
Criteria for evaluation - farm - Level of agricultural production, proffesionalism - Proportion of sales with reference to organic - The company's environmental condition and environmental activities - Processing and added value - Diversity of agricultural activities. - Promotion of organic farming - Participation in local activities - Co-operation with scientists, innovation EMSA 2014
Criteriaforparticipation - product • It is organic product; • At the time of submission the product should be in the market. Can not submit the product that won the competition in 2012. EMSA 2014
Evaluationcriteria - product • Taste • Flavour • Color’saccordance to the product • Texture’saccordance to the product • The packaging material of the product, nature-friendliness, ease of opening, theme, story • Correctness of labeling referring to organic production • Competitiveness among similar products, novelty, marketing May also take into account if labelling includes: • - Product or recipe history, • - Recipe; • - The ingredients, the recipe of origin; • - The number of calories, the nutritional composition; • - Description of the preparation, guide; • - Serving suggestions (when, which, temperature); • - Storage and storage conditions; • - Food hygiene and medical tips (the lactose, allergens, etc.); • - etc. EMSA 2014
Results • 2010 – milk producer&processor • 2011 – mixed farm (milk and beef cattle, cereal) • 2012 – mixed farm (beef cattle, cereal, vegetables) • 2013 – vegetable farm with laying hens and processing vegetables • 2010 – fresh cheese • 2011 – chocolate cream with kama • 2012 – fresh goat cheese in salted water • 2013 – hemp oil
