“ I know where every tool and ingredient is in my kitchen, and I can cook pretty efficiently. When I begin a recipe, I bring out all the ingredients, measure them, and line them up in the order in which I'll use them. Even complicated recipes seem fairly easy once I have everything laid out, and the organization gives me some sense of control.” -John Freidlander

It Matters! • Organization depends on the type of paper being written but should include -Unified, well developed ideas -Information related to the thesis -Coherent thoughts
Sentences are Important • Four Different Sentences -serving as a topic sentence that presents a specific claim or claims -providing specific facts as support -explanation of facts previously mentioned -transitional sentence
Common Problems • Paragraphs filled with unsupported statements • Paragraphs filled with facts that DO NOT support statements • No topic sentences • Paragraph with more than one controlling idea • Transitions needed
Transitions • Why are they important? • They make points in essays easier to follow
Do you get comments in your papers saying: Choppy Jumpy TRANSITION PROBLEMS! How is this related? Dude I need a road map to follow this paper…
Types of Transitions • Transitions between sections • Transitions between paragraphs • Transitions within paragraphs
When writing ask yourself these questions: • Are my claims true and accurate? • Can I say what I want to say more clearly? • Does each sentence contribute directly to my thesis? • Does each paragraph develop a single idea, and do your paragraphs follow a logical progression? • What can I do to make my paper more enjoyable to read?
