  4. Reminders….. • Sign your child’s agenda each night! • Red folders and behavior sheets go home every Friday! Please sign the behavior sheet and return it on Monday in the red folder. (Look for cheese!) • Check the blog! • Spelling City for spelling pattern words each week. Username: performers

  5. Fifth Grade Curriculum • Math Nightly Homework • Language Arts Weekly Spelling Tests DOL Writing/Reading • Science/Social Studies/Health • Specials

  6. Assignments • Reading: Read 30 mins/night • Reading Log • Agenda: signed nightly • Homework: mostly a review of concepts learned that day or day before. Please go over the homework with your child as needed. • Grade level standards: www.gadoe.org • *Please note the adoption of Common Core Standards this year.

  7. Curriculum • Reading: • Nightly Reading Log, 3,750 pages a year=950 pages per month=105 pages a week. • Reponses will be written (at home & at school) to meet CC standards. • Guided Reading in class, whole group reading and small groups.

  8. Language Arts • Writing: • Narrative, opinion, informational, quick writes, summarizes. • Across the curriculum…math, social studies and science. Spelling: • Cloze passage with words • Workbook pages

  9. Math • New curriculum: • CC is more indepth • Several tasks have been moved up to 6th grade…such as Pi. 3 Critical Areas: • 1.Developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication and division of fractions

  10. 2. extending division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations, • 3. developing understanding of volume.

  11. Science • Basic Scientific Concepts • Constructive/Destructive Forces • Chemical and Physical Changes • Electricity • Magnetism • Classification of Organisms

  12. Social Studies • Effective Citizenship • Civil War • Reconstruction • Nation Reunited • The Changing Nation • WWI, Jazz Age and Great Depression • WWII and its Aftermath • Civil Rights • 1975 to Present

  13. Assessments • Study guides will come home in various forms: outlines, sheet of notes, foldables, student written notes, etc. Please assist your child in helping him or her study the required material for assessments.

  14. Grading Scale • 90-100: A • 80-89: B • 74-79: C • 70-73: D • Below 70: F • Pinnacle is coming…

  15. Field Trips • Atlanta History Museum: Civil War • Hike to Sibley Forest for constructive/destructive forces • Bremen Museum: Holocaust • Jekyll • GA Power: electricity • HTHT (in house)

  16. Testing • ITBS: Sept. 7-14 • Writing Assessment: March 6 • CRCT: April 22-26

  17. Common Core • Based on international goals. • Performance based, reflective and critical thinking, problem solving • Rigorous! • Provides students with the opportunity to use ideas, theories, and problem solving techniques in order to apply them to new situations.

  19. School-wide Information • Transportation changes MUST be in writing. No changes can be made over the phone. • Visitors MUST sign in; it’s the law! • No “drop-offs”! (i.e. homework, projects, books, etc.) • (Exceptions: medicine, eyeglasses, lunch) • Absences and tardies

  21. BoosterthonOur Biggest Fundraiser. Fully funds the PTA Budget. Provides enrichment opportunities for ALL Sope Creek Students! Focus on FITNESS, LEADERSHIP, & CHARACTER. Important Dates: 8/17 – Crazy Hat Day 8/21 – Pep Rally 8/22 – 8/29 – Team Days 8/30 – Boosterthon Fun Run! This year’s theme: On the road to good character: Leadership * Character * Learning * Fitness *A Good Attitude

  22. Transportation • We will not be able to accept guest riders on buses until after Labor Day. • Bus Drivers are teaching procedures and creating seating charts. • We may have some bus routes that are full and unable to take guest riders this year. • All transportation changes must require a written note. • Students are never tardy if they ride the bus. • K-2nd graders have yellow tags on backpacks to remind bus drivers that they may not get off the bus without someone to meet them. If you change backpacks, please transfer the yellow tag.
