Overview of Asexual reproduction • Number of parent(s): • 1 • Parents DNA and offspring's DNA is: • Identical • Types • Mitosis • Budding • Regeneration • Fragmentation
Budding: • a type of asexual reproduction in which a cell or group of cells pinch off from the parent to form a new individual. • Mitosis: • a type of asexual reproduction is when a nucleus undergoes cell division in which two daughter cells are formed, each containing a complete set of identical chromosomes. • The stages of Mitosis are: • Prophase • Metaphase • Anaphase • Telophase • What happens before and after mitosis? • Interphase • Cytokinesis
Sexual Reproduction • Words to know: • Somatic cell • Body cell • Gamete • Sex cell • Sperm • Egg • Zygote • Fertilized egg • Haploid cell • Contains half the number of chromosomes as body cells • In humans: Contains 23 chromosomes • In lions: Contains 24 chromosomes • Diploid cell • Contains double the number of chromosomes as sex cells • In humans: Contains 46 chromosomes • In lions: Contains 48 Chromosomes
Sexual Reproduction • Number of parents: • 2 parents • Genetic make-up of offspring: • Varies from parents • Fertilization: • Where an egg and sperm unite to form a zygote (offspring) Human sperm cells attempting to fertilize an egg cell(ovum). renjith krishnan /FreeDigitalPhotos.net
The way a scientist would say it: • In sexual reproduction a gamete (egg cell) unites with another gamete (sperm cell). This process is called fertilization. When the two cells combine together they form a zygote. The fertilized egg cell, carrying genetic information from each parent, multiplies to form the complete organism. • Remember: • Gametes are haploid cells
If all of the cells in your body are diploid cells how do the sperm and egg become haploid? Diploid: contains double the number of chromosomes Haploid: contains half the number of chromosomes
Meiosis • Produces sex cells • Sex cells contain half the number of chromosomes--haploids • Does this in two parts • Meiosis I • Meiosis II • At the end of both parts four haploid daughter cells are produced.
As a scientists would say it: • Meiosis is a form of cell division that allows offspring to have the same number of chromosomes as their parent. This kind of cell division, which produces gametes (sex cell) containing half the number of chromosomes as a parent’s body cell, is called meiosis.
