Why ABBIF ? • Species and specimen data from from samples collected in the Amazon Basin are not available on-line • Need to address the knowledge gaps (taxonomic and biogeographic) with 21st century technology (information society) • With promotion of South-South Cooperation, and • Capacity building !!!

  4. Data from GBIF (Nov 2006): all occurrences between 13N and 20S and 83W and 34W 1,342,953 records

History overview • ABBIF feasibility study (2005) funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation was carried out by CRIA &GBIF • Meetings with key players (2006) • 2007 GBIF Campaign proposal and strategy (priorities and partners) • 2008 (partner meetings + project proposals) • 2009 ABBIF campaign activities
